At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
