Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
