The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
